Expect Less Junk Mail in your Inbox

NUIT's Computing Services has implemented a new increased level of security within the University's E-mail Defense System (EDS) - the system that scans and filters junk e-mail, phishing attempts, viruses, and malicious high-risk attachments sent to the University community - to better ensure a safe computing environment at Northwestern. Another layer of filtering has been added, decreasing the amount of unwanted junk mail even reaching the University's central mail servers (casbah, hecky, lulu, and merle). The decrease in the amount of incoming junk e-mail provides faculty, staff, and students with increased computer security and allows for easier e-mail management.

Users can continue to access EDS to manage user-specific sender lists and configure various junk e-mail filtering options. Questions can be directed to the NUIT Support Center at 847-491-HELP (4357) or consultant@northwestern.edu.

Summer at the Support Center

It's been a busy two weeks for the NUIT Support Center. We started off the summer by assisting students and faculty logging on to CAESAR so they could view and post grades. Our next challenge was ensuring that parents and relatives could view the webcast of Northwestern University's 151st commencement ceremony. Congratulations new graduates! This week we've been busy helping new summer students with NetID and e-mail activation and setting up their wireless connections. We're looking forward to a summer filled with new challenges and we hope everyone enjoys the coming months.  As a reminder, the Support Center is operating under our summer schedule and is open Monday through Friday 8a.m. - 5p.m.

Our Loss of Tim Ward

It is with sadness that we report that Tim Ward, associate director of Telecommunications and Network Services, lost his battle with Leukemia on June 13th, 2009.  An alumnus of Northwestern University, Tim will be remembered by NUIT as warm, gregarious, and brilliant in his roles as technologist, engineer and manager.  Staff looked forward to his reports at monthly staff meetings that were guaranteed to be laced with jokes and humor to brighten the day.  Tim's time with us was way too short.  He will be greatly missed by his friends and colleagues throughout the University.

There will be a visitation at Donnellan Funeral Home, 10045 Skokie Blvd. on Wednesday, June 17th, from 3:00 to 8:00 PM.  Flowers will be accepted at the Donnellan Funeral Home.  The funeral will be on Thursday, June 18th, at the Sheil Catholic Center, 2110 Sheridan Road, on Northwestern's Evanston campus at 11:00 AM.  A reception will follow the funeral.
